We're TrustMark registered: what that means when you hire us

We're on TrustMark's public register, licence 4264445. What TrustMark checks, what it doesn't, and how to check every badge a builder shows you.

One of our founders on the scaffold of a stone house, nail gun in hand.

On 17 September 2026, Wilson & Cole Developments went onto TrustMark's public register under licence number 4264445. If you're about to hire a builder, that matters for one practical reason. You can now check us yourself, in about a minute, instead of taking our word for it. This piece explains what being a TrustMark registered builder actually means, what TrustMark checks and what it doesn't, and how to look up every badge we show. You can run the same checks on anyone else who quotes for your work.

The news, from Dan and Craig

We're Daniel Webster and Craig Cook, Dan and Craig on site. We met at college studying carpentry nearly twenty years ago, ran our own firms, then joined forces in 2021. We named the company after our grandfathers, Wilson and Cole, who were both builders. The mission we wrote down then still holds: "to give builders and construction companies a better name and make our grandfathers proud." There's more on that in the story behind our name.

A better name doesn't come from saying you're trustworthy. It comes from letting people check. TrustMark is the Government Endorsed Quality scheme for work a homeowner chooses to have done in or around their home, and it operates under licence from the government's Department for Business & Trade (TrustMark homeowner FAQs). Being on its register puts us somewhere you can verify, next to the credentials we already held.

What a TrustMark registered builder has been checked for

TrustMark doesn't vet builders itself. It licenses Scheme Providers, which are accreditation bodies and trade associations, and they license and monitor the registered businesses for technical competence, trading practices and customer service (Why TrustMark?). In plain terms, a registered business has:

  • A code to work to. Every registered business commits to TrustMark's Code of Conduct and Customer Charter.
  • A complaints process. It must be clear, fair and transparent. If a complaint can't be settled with the business, TrustMark's process can take it further, ultimately to the Disputes Resolution Ombudsman.
  • Regular inspections. TrustMark requires an inspection by a qualified independent inspector at least every three years.
  • Paperwork checked every year. Insurances and similar documents are checked annually by the Scheme Provider.

What TrustMark does not do

There are limits, and you should know them before you rely on a logo.

  • It isn't building control. TrustMark doesn't sign off your steels, foundations or fire escape route. Building control does that, and issues the completion certificate you'll need when you sell. You normally make the building control application. We liaise with the inspector, book the inspections, and can make the application for you for a small admin fee.
  • It doesn't price your project. Nor does it tell you whether a builder suits your particular work. A registered firm can still be the wrong fit for a dormer loft or a new build.
  • It only covers work done while a business is registered. TrustMark's complaints process can't take on a complaint about a business that wasn't registered when the work was carried out. So check the register when you sign, not just when you first spot the logo.

If the name on a quote doesn't match the name on a register, ask why. A badge on a van or a website costs nothing to copy. The register entry is the part that counts.

Everything we hold, in one place

TrustMark sits alongside the rest of our credentials. The full set lives on our guarantee and accreditations page. In short:

  • SafeContractor, certificate OC4217, valid to 10 April 2027. It's our main health and safety accreditation and gives us SSIP recognition. An SSIP assessment looks at a firm's health and safety policy, risk assessments and method statements, insurances, training and trade qualifications (SafeContractor). For you, it means someone outside the firm has looked at how we run a safe site.
  • Federation of Master Builders member. FMB vetting covers trading history, credit history, proof of public liability insurance and director checks, and members' work is inspected on joining (FMB).
  • Structural Timber Association member.
  • TrustMark registered, licence 4264445.
  • Workmanship guarantee. Our workmanship guarantee is insurance-backed through the Independent Warranty Association (IWA). Wilson & Cole Developments Ltd is an IWA member (membership no. WMQ.08.26). The details are on our guarantee and accreditations page.
  • Companies House number 13362420, incorporated 28 April 2021.
  • Gas and electrics are carried out by the Gas Safe registered engineers and NICEIC-registered electricians we use.

Badges are the minimum. Here's what tells you more

A register tells you a firm has passed checks. It can't tell you how they'll treat your house. Three things can.

Reviews. We're rated 5.0 on Google from 28 reviews (as of 1 October 2026). Read them on our reviews page, and look for what people say about mess, communication and whether the price held. Those are the things a badge can't show.

A site visit. Come and see a site we're working on. Look at how materials are stored, whether the dust sheets are down, and how the pavement looks when the crew packs up at 5pm. Our site hours are 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and you're welcome during them. Our projects page shows the kind of work you'd be looking at.

A detailed, itemised quote. Every line priced, so you can compare like with like. The price only changes if you agree the change first, and we invoice against valuations of the work carried out, so you pay for what has been built. How we work sets out the rest.

If you're still at the shortlist stage, our guide on how to choose a builder in Bristol covers the questions to ask at that first visit.

Frequently asked questions

What is TrustMark?

TrustMark is the Government Endorsed Quality scheme for work done in or around your home. It licenses Scheme Providers, which license and monitor registered businesses for technical competence, trading practices and customer service. Registered businesses commit to a Code of Conduct and must have a clear complaints process.

How do I check that a builder is TrustMark registered?

Search the business name on TrustMark's find a tradesperson page. You should see the business listed with its licence number. Ours is 4264445, under Wilson & Cole Developments Limited. Check that the registration covers the trade you need and that it's active on the day you sign.

Does TrustMark sign off building work under the building regulations?

No. Building control does that, through inspections and a completion certificate at the end. TrustMark covers how a registered business trades and treats its customers. You normally make the building control application, and we liaise with the inspector and book the inspections.

What happens if something goes wrong with a TrustMark registered builder?

Raise it with the business first. Every registered business must have a clear, fair complaints process. If that doesn't resolve it, TrustMark's complaints process can take it further, up to the Disputes Resolution Ombudsman. It only applies to work done while the business was registered.

Is your workmanship guarantee insurance-backed?

Yes. Our workmanship guarantee is insurance-backed through the Independent Warranty Association (IWA). Wilson & Cole Developments Ltd is an IWA member (membership no. WMQ.08.26). You'll find the details on our guarantee and accreditations page.

Come and see a site we're working on. That tells you more than any brochure. Ask us for a site visit and Dan or Craig will set up a time that suits you.
